In addition to lagniappe parents, there are aunts, uncles, and grandparents who embody the generosity of lagniappe. However, I want to take a moment to thank the lagniappe teachers out there. Lagniappe teachers are easy to spot. See a teacher getting hugs from students? You've found one. Talking to other parents who sigh lovingly and smile at the mention of a teacher's name? There's another. Lagniappe teachers care about their students and will do whatever it takes to help them. Period. Lagniappe teachers don't refer to IEP's to figure out what they DON'T have to do, waiting for parents to figure out what to include in that document before taking action. Lagniappe teachers listen to parents, put in extra hours, dream up alternative assessments, and refuse to make excuses for doing less than their jobs. They are superheroes to be sure, and we desperately need more of them.

AuthorIn my head, I'm still 25. I'm so not, so it's a good thing my boys keep me young....except for when they remind me I'm the oldest person in the house. Archives
